About the Barco Encore Video Processor (VP)
The Barco Encore Video Processor (VP) is the central component of the Encore Presentation System, housed in a 3RU rackmount chassis and providing all input, output, layering and widescreen blending functions. Each VP can be configured with one, two or three Mix/Effect (M/E) boards to suit different application requirements. Every M/E board delivers two independent Athena scaler channels, Barco Folsom's proprietary scaler supporting universal analog and digital video inputs including NTSC, PAL, SECAM, SDI, HD-SDI, computer resolutions up to 1600x1200, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 2048x1080p Digital Cinema and plasma display resolutions. The Athena scaler features 1:1 pixel sampling, motion adaptive de-interlacing, 3:2 and 2:2 pull-down detection, aspect ratio correction, image cropping and real-time window resizing. Each VP functions as a single destination within an Encore system, and multiple VPs can be combined to build advanced multi-destination or blended configurations. Output synchronisation supports locking to an external NTSC/PAL black burst signal.
Barco Encore Video Processor (VP) — buyer FAQs
What is the Barco Encore Video Processor and what does it do?
The Barco Encore Video Processor (VP) is the central processing unit of the Encore Presentation System, housed in a 3RU rackmount chassis. It handles all input routing, output, layering and widescreen blending functions. Each VP operates as a single destination within a larger Encore system, and multiple VPs can be combined to build multi-destination or blended configurations suited to wide screen presentations.
How many Mix/Effect boards can the Barco Encore VP be configured with, and why does it matter?
Each Encore VP can be fitted with one, two or three Mix/Effect (M/E) boards depending on the application. Every M/E board adds two independent Athena scaler channels, so the number of boards directly determines how many simultaneous sources can be scaled and positioned. A three M/E configuration provides the greatest layering capacity within a single VP unit.
What input and output formats does the Encore VP support?
The VP accepts component and composite analog formats (NTSC, PAL, SECAM), SDI, HD-SDI, computer resolutions up to 1600x1200, analog HD formats including 720p, 1080i and 1080p, 2048x1080p Digital Cinema video, and plasma display resolutions. Outputs are provided in both analog and digital formats, and output synchronisation can lock to an external NTSC or PAL black burst signal.
Who makes the Encore VP and where does it fit in their range?
The Encore VP is made by Barco, a Belgian visualisation technology company with a long history in pro AV, large-venue projection and image processing for staging and entertainment. The Encore VP represents Barco's dedicated presentation switching and processing line, incorporating the Athena scaler developed by Barco Folsom, and is designed to sit at the core of scalable multi-screen Encore Presentation Systems.
What should I check when buying a used Barco Encore VP?
Verify how many M/E boards are installed, since this determines the unit's scaling capacity and affects value. Confirm the output board is present and that both analog and digital outputs function correctly. Check that input formats relevant to your setup are operational. Used condition and included accessories also affect pricing. Each listing on this page includes condition details, and purchases are covered by a 21-day warranty for major functional faults.
